Are you someone who loves our planet and wants to do good in a role with a biodiversity-focused global organisation?
Would you like to do more with your technical skills? Are you somebody who’s dreamed of working to support and connect people and systems for the benefit of species conservation? Read on.
Thankfully, as you read this there are organisations already working on deeply detailed and technical systems aimed at recovering and regenerating ecosystems. These are essential in promoting collaboration and preventing biodiversity loss or limiting loss in scenarios where it is unavoidable. These systems range from databases on endangered species and key biodiversity areas to things like tracking pollution, monitoring species and the recovery of regions or sites. They are integrated into companies, governments and organisations all over the world and help all to understand how ecosystems interact and influence one another and how we, as humans, can protect them.
A passion for nature or the environment more broadly will serve you well here, as a conservation org. they are hyper-focused on impact and making their work accessible, integrating partners and customers into their platform to expand who is making use of this data for decision-making.
The CIO here has real ambitions to see the tech evolve across this 2,000+ people org with ~10 regional offices and teams spread more broadly than that across biodiversity hotspots (physical & political). That includes hardware, software, data science, and the whole shebang.
So, what will you be doing specifically?
Designing, building and maintaining the tech foundation that underpins a key database and platform. This will include investigating issues and implementing fixes to build in resilience and remove points of failure. You’ll also bring documentation up to standard; much was completed by consultants and wasn’t always updated by internal members of the team so there is some work to do in enabling the evolution of this platform and this may include switching to Python and Django or other technologies in the longer-term – 2+ years.
The skills priorities are Ruby on Rails and exp building APIs, exp with geospatial data and GIS tools is highly desirable. The role will be 70:30 Backend : Leadership, with some infrastructure and security tasks in there.
There are a number of partners who collaborate on various other interlinked tools, so cross-team collaboration experience will be beneficial. If you’ve touched on security or some DevOps tools and cloud technologies, but not extensively, there is support to grow your knowledge in the form of partners/teammates and funding for courses, textbooks or other materials if needed.
Experience Required:
Ruby on Rails – Backend focused
PostgreSQL
Docker
DevOps – AWS
Leadership Experience
It’s a small team of 5, including the systems manager, that is part of a broader conservation tech ecosystem of 5 to 6 other teams and systems that occasionally collaborate or share resources, including with some of those partner orgs.
You’ll be involved with the design, review code and work closely with, scientists, ecologists, and climate researchers, prioritise work and engage some stakeholders or 3rd parties, as some internal teams such as GIS and data analysts and program managers to support them in delivering projects across various tiers of the conservation sector.
Interested in addressing biodiversity loss and turning things around? Do say hello 😊.
We welcome diverse applicants and are dedicated to treating all applicants with dignity and respect, regardless of background.
Location: Office in Sheffield, hybrid working of one day per week in the office.
Salary: Up to £60k
Do you love start-up life but can’t afford the riskiness of joining one right now?
Do you see yourself as a bit of a pioneer? Someone who relishes a challenge, and would love to be the first DevOps Engineer in a start-up with a difference?
If this sounds like you, read on- this is what you’ve been waiting for!
I am recruiting for an excellent start-up company in Sheffield. They aren’t your risky kind of start-up though: they are the brainchild of a very well-established business, so come with all the security, know-how, and business contacts to know they’ll do well, so it’s a win-win!
This organization is still in its infancy: they now have a few developers, data scientists/engineers, heads of departments, but no DevOps team…yet.
You will be their first DevOps hire, so it’s a really important role for them to fill with the right person. You’ll have a few years of DevOps experience under your belt, using tech like Azure, Azure DevOps, PowerShell, Python, Bash, Kubernetes, Bicep/Terraform, etc. and you understand how DevOps fits into a tech department.
You’ll be adept at making sure that the technical estate is set up for success: that everything that can be automated is automated, that alerts, logging, monitoring, CI/CD pipelines are set up, etc. you want to enable the team to do their best work, and you just love building robust, enterprise-level systems to ensure they achieve it!
As you can imagine, you’ll have a lot of say in the technical direction of your domain and will get to make key tech decisions and implementations, all the while, being supported by the VP of Engineering.
Career progression is baked into this role, and all roles at the company at this stage, as you’ll be joining them on essentially the ground floor. As the company grows, so will your position within it.
I don’t like to use platitudes like ‘exciting’ or ‘dynamic’ in my adverts as a general rule, as they’ve lost their meaning through overuse, but I can confidently say that this role is a genuinely exciting one- it’s got everything an enthusiastic and talented DevOps Engineer could want in a role!
If this sounds right up your street, apply now or get in touch to find out more about your new role.
We welcome diverse applicants and are dedicated to treating all applicants with dignity and respect, regardless of background.
Do you love cars? How about the planet?Fancy playing a part in reducing vehicle emissions and making driving as safe as possible?
If you’re nodding vigorously, then you’re in luck because I’m working with a company that does just that!
They have tasked me with finding someone to join their Desktop Team, so you’ll be using C# as your primary language, WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) 70% of the time and WinForms (Windows Forms) 30% of the time.
You’ll need a great academic background in Maths/ Physics/ Computer Science/ Mechanical Engineering as the work you’ll be doing needs to be exceptionally accurate as it’ll be used for safety standard setting in the industry. If you’ve got experience of working in the automotive industry, that would be super useful!
The work you’ll be undertaking in this post will be vital for not only your employer, but the industry at large, so if you’ve felt like a tiny cog in a giant machine (pun fully intended!) and like your work doesn’t really matter, then this role will be like a breath of fresh air!
You’ll also get one day per month as ‘self-directed time’ to do as you please! You can learn a new language, take a technical exam, or do anything you like!
Over the next couple of years, the company is looking to link up the Desktop Team with another team that uses a variety of tech, including Docker and Kubernetes, so there’s a chance to learn new tech further down the line in this role.
The work arrangement is simple – you work from home as much as you want to: the minimum requirement for any travel is twice per year for team building events, average amongst current staff is 1/ month in the office.
If this sounds good to you, apply now or drop me a line to find out more!
We welcome diverse applicants and are dedicated to treating all applicants with dignity and respect regardless of background.
Location: Fully Remote but you have to be based in the East Coast, USA, or Mainland Europe
Salary: Up to £150k with generous benefits + equity
*PLEASE NOTE: Python/FastAPI + React/Typescript expertise is essential*
Wow.
That’s how we felt after the briefing call with the Head of Engineering. Why? Because this opportunity really does have everything.
Work with a purpose that is changing the world for the better? Check.
Backed by serious investment whilst also doubling revenue YoY? Check.
Remote work, with super-talented colleagues spread across the globe? Check.
Great pay, benefits and culture? Check, check, check!
This *ridiculously* cool climate-tech company is at the start-up/scale-up inflection point.
They’re moving past the days where problems were solved with unstructured grit, where intuition and random brilliance were the order of the day. They’re now looking for sanity and scalability, and you’ll play a leading role in this transformation.
Their team develops a unique product that helps organisations proactively monitor and manage one of the major (and up until now, less-addressed) effects of climate change. It is a devastating problem that is wreaking havoc across the world, but with the products you’ll be developing you’ll directly be contributing to a safer and more stable world.
With a new round of investment and new customers signing up for their groundbreaking product, they are on the cusp of a major recruitment drive, but none of their roles are more important than this Chief Software Engineer role.
Currently, they have a talented team of software engineers with a front-end bias, and little in the way of deep Python software development experience. With these roles, they want to help balance this, by hiring a super-capable Chief Software Engineer with expert-level proficiency in full-stack, cloud-driven (GCP, Azure or AWS) development in React, Angular or Typescript along with Python/FastAPI (this is vital).
You must also have a genuine interest in the sustainability movement and working for a company that is mission-driven as you’ll be working with super-passionate people who care deeply about our planet.
You’ll have no formal line management responsibilities in this role but will lead/coach the team and drive the adoption of industry-leading technology and standards across the engineering team. You’ll be a flexible and sensitive technical leader, able to win over colleagues who are working through this cultural and technical transition using your excellent relationship-building, leadership and collaboration skills.
The role will be remote based with occasional travel into London and/or Amsterdam, and you can be based anywhere in the US, mainland Europe or on the East Coast of the US (but able to be flexible to GMT/CET working patterns).
On offer is a salary of up to £150k with generous benefits + equity.
Please apply to find out if you might be suitable (all our applicants are screened by an experienced, human recruiter and not AI)
We welcome diverse applicants and are dedicated to treating all applicants with dignity and respect, regardless of background.
Not all Data Scientist roles are equal – you know this. Some involve working in large, slow-moving companies that are trying to pivot to AI and ML. They’re OK, but they’re just soooo slooooow.
Others involve working in excitable, fast-moving start-ups where the tech and culture are amazing, but you’re only ever a month away from potentially losing your job…or getting promoted! The future is just too uncertain for your liking (and your rent/mortgage/Deliveroo payments)
Then there are roles with companies like the one we are recruiting for. An established, profitable young business who have struck a goldmine of an idea, and already have customers queuing up to sign on the dotted line.
They have developed a data-led product that is going to revolutionise their sector, and the orders are coming in thick and fast from major global players who they’ve worked with for years.
You’ll be joining a new data science team that is likely to grow further over the next 12 months.
The role will involve using various statistical / machine learning techniques to drive insights from large, complex datasets on behalf of their customers.
You’ll need to be a dab-hand at data analysis and visualisation, and will likely have used Python, R and SQL in your current or previous roles.
Any exposure to ML models and/or Cloud tools such as Azure Databricks would be advantageous.
The role would be based mainly from home with travel into Sheffield once a week, so ideally you will drive.
If this sounds like something worth discussing further, apply or get in touch with us at Rebel Recruiters!
The company are likely to grow further, so if you are an experienced data scientist who would prefer a more senior role please apply anyway stating your salary expectations.
Please note: All UK-based applicants will be given a guaranteed reply.
We welcome diverse applicants and are dedicated to treating all applicants with dignity and respect, regardless of background.
