Development Database Administrator (SQL DBA)


  • Headline: SQL DBA with around 70:30 split across development : production. It’s a new role so the limitations of what is defined in the job role will, in part, depend on the capability of the person.
  • Location: Nottingham
  • Salary: up to £40k + 10% Bonus + Benefits
  • Ideal Candidate: an experienced DBA who wants to take ownership of the DB estate and establish best practice, stamping their mark on the business.

Company & Role Overview

There is a great culture here with a flat management structure in this small but growing company. There are about 45 people in the company so far and are expecting to substantially increase headcount.

This is a new role that has been carved out as the devs in the business have just kept up with all these responsibilities between themselves. It’s taking too much time away from their main duties and they are not doing it in the best way in can be done so want someone to come on board to take the reigns, fix the backlog of issues and create an efficient database estate moving forwards as things are about to start seriously growing – so they want to establish best practice now before it becomes a problem!

Main Accountabilities:

  • Monitoring the performance of queries in production
  • Tuning queries to improve performance
  • Creation and automation of maintenance routines and administrative tasks
  • Maintaining change management & configuration management frameworks

Essential experience

  • Extensive experience using MS SQL Server or similar product
  • Experienced in tuning database queries and optimising for performance, with consideration to operating costs.
  • Experienced in data modelling to ensure application needs are met (both functional and non-functional requirements)
  • Experienced in achieving high-availability as well as deploying changes to large mission critical databases


  • Experience using SQL Azure (managed databases on Microsoft Azure)
  • Experience in using and/or maintaining NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra, Elasticsearch etc.)
  • Experience of implementing disaster recovery processes to enable recovery from events such as data centre outages
  • Proficient writing T-SQL code and querying complex datasets
  • Hands on experience of working with cloud platforms
    (Azure / AWS / GCP)

The working hours will be just 35 hours per week. It can be either of the following hours: 8am to 4pm OR 9am to 5pm OR 10am to 6pm.
